nearshore

the wave and current dominated zone extending from depths where wave shoaling begins to the landward limit of storm-wave influence.

nearshore circulation

a current system driven by breaking waves, consisting of onshore transport across the surf zone by breaking waves, a lateral transport in the surf zone by longshore currents, and a seaward return through the breaker zone by rip currents. The complete cycle constitutes a circulation cell.

notch

a cut or hollow along the base of a sea cliff formed by undercutting due to wave erosion associated with the shock pressure of the wave bore striking the sea cliff. Cf: sea cliff, wave-cut terrace.
